Shipwrecked British Seamen Rescued By SOS In Sand.
An S.O.S. message traced in the sand saved the lives of a party of British seamen. They had spent 12 days in an open boat before running ashore on a desolate part of the African coast. They were found by natives who treat them hospitably. Meanwhile they traced an "S.O.S." in large letters in the sand. The signal was spotted by a British reconnaissance aircraft, which reported to the nearest naval base. A trawler was sent out, and the castaways were transferred from the shore to the ship in native canoes, and are are all now on their way back to Britain to man another ship. Picture Shows: The survivors, safely aboard the trawler, are mustered by the ship's Coxwain. The trawler's crew made them thoroughly welcome and fitted them out with clothing and gave them medical attention where necessary. Not to be published before evening papers Thursday 10th December 1942
